Decoranza II: Green Expectations

I absolutely, unequivocally, love the color green. After purchasing our green couch for the living room, I knew I had to paint at least one more room green (our master bedroom is a sea foam green). Lucky for our dining room, it was the target.

After debating a few different hues, we settled on Grape Leaves by Behr. It is remarkably close to the color of our infamous green couch and I thought it would look great in a room adjacent, but not directly connected, to the living room. This creates flowing cohesion between the two spaces with out the commitment of 20 feet tall green walls (our dining room only has nine foot ceilings).

Now that it is painted, I will admit that I was quite nervous about choosing such a loud color for our dining room. My apprehension grew from the familiarity of seeing insane asylum white walls, but now I couldn't be happier with our decision. It looks amazing and it is definitely a jaw dropper (in a good way) when you enter our home.

Here's the sterile room before:

And now check out the punchy, sour-apple green (I also call Kate Spade green). Isn't it juicy?

I have to say, paint is one of the most affordable ways to provide a fast and easy update to a room. This time, we splurged on Behr's new Premium Plus paint to assure that we would get a nice even coat and at $32 a gallon it was well worth it. In two quick coats, the room had a smooth seamless cover and it only cost $70 buck-a-roos. The next time we paint a room, we will definitely be getting this type again.

Decoranza I: Dine and Dish

The whole purpose of a dining room is to have an intimate place where you can get together with your friends, family, or neighbors to eat, drink, chat, play games, etc. I would venture to say that these activities could be quite difficult with out a dining room table.

We were lucky enough to have a table on loan from my parents for a few years. Then, when my mom said she wanted to give it to my grandparents to replace their old one, who was I to say no? Justin and I occasionally used it, but we aren't the type to be throwing dinner parties a la Bree from Desperate Housewives. That's how we found ourselves with an empty dining room. Here's a photo of the room with the loaner.

From February on, this room was empty and it didn't matter that much to us, since we didn't use it all the time. However, I still kept my eyes peeled for a new table. Luckily, I found one shortly after and fell in love with it, but the budget didn't allow it at that time, so I made a mental note to keep checking back in the future to make sure it was still there. Unfortunately, not more than two months later, on one of my visits to the store, I noticed that it was gone. I begged the sales woman to find me one at another store and she regrettably told me that it had been discontinued and there were none left in the system. Not only did I leave the store in sadness, but I was also mad at myself for not checking back sooner because I probably could have scored it on sale.

The next table that I found is the new Stockholm table at Ikea.

I love the shape, tapered legs, and especially the chairs that go with it, BUT I do not like the color, at all. I figured that if we were going to spend over $1,000 on furniture, it should be perfect. So I asked the sales assistant if it came in another color (please, dark brown or black!) and she told me no. So I asked if it was going to be available in another color in the future and she said no. So, that was a no go. Here's the table and chairs.

But, I did not give up hope and I wasn't actively looking...though, I still checked out the tables at nearly every store I entered. And up until a turning point, I had yet to find the perfect one at the right price. So, when I was strolling through my local Goodwill one day, I felt like I was struck with lightning when I turned to see this beauty.

The table is nearly identical to the Ikea table, but a much older model. I too love its shape and chairs, but the color would have to be corrected. I circled it, rapped it with my knuckles, sat in the chairs, almost cried when I found out it came with a leaf, tested out the mechanics of removing and inserting the leaf, inspected each and every angle, and decided this was the one. I grabbed the tickets and walked right up to the register, not stopping to look at anything else. Must. Buy. Immediately.

Hopefully by now, you know that I am one to score major deals and this was no exception. The table was $14.99 and each chair (5) was $4.99, I also used my frequent Goodwill shopper card (saving an additional 10%), AND I had a 15% birthday coupon from the month of May still setting up a campfire in my purse. The total for the entire set was--drumroll, please--$32.85. Not too shabby. Now, the hard part, breaking the news to my unsuspecting husband.

...!...?...?...!...???

Whew! That talk went much easier than I thought, and thanks to my awesome friend Mike, from Cutting Crew (remember I talked about the amazing job he did installing our patio), I had it home the next day where it was time to get down and dirty.

First order of business, remove the seat cushions, in five minutes flat. We flipped each chair over, unscrewed the bolts, and removed the seat cushions so that I could reupholster them in something more up-to-date and less blue.

Then we stripped the dirt, grime, and finish off all wood surfaces with Zinsser Strip Fast Furniture Refinisher and some metal wool scrubbers. Making sure no residue was left from the refinisher, we wiped everything down with a wet rag.

Then we gave her an all-over light sanding, wiped her down again, and she was ready for paint. We applied three thin coats of semi-gloss Behr paint in Bitter Chocolate to make sure all surfaces were evenly covered. The spindles on the chair backs were quite challenging, but we pushed through and in about a week everything was ready for a top coat.

For the clear sealant (to protect against water damage) I picked up spray and liquid versions of semi-gloss Varathane outdoor Spar Urethane. I wanted to make sure all surfaces were completely sealed so I used the spray on the chairs and table legs, and rolled the liquid on the table. I made a small error when putting the last coat on the top and rolled on too much, so I grabbed a clean paint brush and in long strokes, in the direction with the wood grain, brushed a little bit off. This resulted in a slightly textured looking finish that I am very happy with. Some people may call it a happy accident!

Here's the lil' lady resting in her permanent spot in our before-the-decoranza dining room.

This project was a blast and kept my weekends occupied for weeks. It may look hard, but anyone can do it with patience and a DIY attitude. If you have more detailed questions about how we did something, shoot us an email or post a comment below, and don't forget to check back tomorrow for the next dining room decoranza post!

Decoranza nibbler

If you haven't heard yet, I have officially declared next week as Dining Room Decoranza (cue the Godzilla background music)! Some of you have seen snippets of my dining room WIP (work in progress) and I am finally ready to unveil it to y'all.

But first, I am sharing a bunch of the images that reside in my inspiration folder for this room. I saved photos and screen shots of products that I have seen around and like the shape, color, or other little feature it has. So, let your mind wander as you look through these and don't forget to check back on Monday when I'll be revealing the first post of the dining room decoranza!

Donald Judd or cheap furniture?

Do you think you have an eye for design? Take this quiz to find out if you can distinguish between a Donald Judd or a cheap piece of furniture.
I will truthfully admit that when I came across this quiz I had absolutely no idea who Donald Judd was. However, I decided that to get an accurate score, I needed to take the quiz prior to reading about him and I am proud to report that I scored 10 out of 12 correct. Warning, some of the questions are hard!

You can read all about Donald Judd thanks to handy-dandy wikipedia. But for those who want a quick synopsis of who he is, Donald Judd was a minimalist artist who created innovative pieces from the 1960s through the 1980s. He worked in many mediums including paint, sculpture, and furniture design.

So, what do you think, Donald Judd or cheap furniture? Take the quiz to find out!

Twin Cities Exploration

The other weekend Justin and I traveled up to Eden Prairie, Minnesota to visit my great friends, Heidi and Don. I must report that we had a great time with Heidi, but unfortunately Don was under the weather and I think we saw maybe two fleeting glances of him the entire weekend. Not to say that I didn't want to visit with him, but after our Saturday spent out and around town, we arrived back at their abode to find out that he had stopped over at Urgent Care while we were gone and was told that he could possibly have the Swine Flu. So, we helped Heidi disinfect the joint before taking it easy the rest of the night. On the brighter side, we had just returned from a fun filled day out and around the cities, which I am here to share with you!

Our Saturday started on Grand Avenue in St. Paul. We grabbed our caffeinated beverages from their respective shops and strolled up and down the street catching up and checking out the varied offerings. Before leaving the area, we swung into Punch Pizza to get some chow to go.

Heidi had talked up this joint, gushing about its identity design, but also raving about the food. Being that her friend (not me), who studied abroad in Rome, claimed it had nearly authentic tasting italian pizza, we had to try it, and she wasn't wrong. Yum!

Being a huge fan of cheese, I ordered the Quattro Formaggi (mozzarella, fontina, goat cheese, and parmesan), Justin got the Toto (arugula, prosciutto, goat cheese, cracked red pepper, and garlic), and Heidi ordered her usual, the Borgata (sun-dried tomato, goat cheese, eggplant, saracene olive, and basil).

Let me just say that those who live in the twin cities are dangerously spoiled by having a pizza chain like this. Justin and I have yet to find anything as delicious around us, and we live in the (second) city of pizza!

After getting our fill of the deliciousness, we went on an adventure to find the mecca of Goodwill. Heidi told me that she knew of one of their stores that was the biggest she had ever been in. Not surprisingly, she had me at "giant Go-". So after a few wrong turns (we blame it on the GPS) we finally found it. Unfortunately, the selection was underwhelming and we didn't stay long, but never fear, we didn't throw in the towel! As we were on our way to the next destination, we drove by this...

...and I yelled "stop!" Any store that puts Herman Miller and Lane furniture outside on the sidewalk deserves at least a look-see and this particular place is Classic Retro at Pete's on University Avenue in St. Paul.

I knew this shop owner had to have a sense of humor because when we walked up to the entrance I noticed that his sign called out the first letter of each word spelling C-R-@-P. Let's just say that Justin couldn't agree more and Heidi and I couldn't disagree more.

When we entered the store we were pleasantly welcomed by (I'm assuming) the owner who was playing his guitar and plopped in front of a T.V. with the football game on. Justin didn't have much to say after that! Additionally, the store was jammed front to back, top to bottom with amazing pieces. Sadly, the three of us could only afford to look, but he had some good eye candy.

(See the guy way in the back with the guitar? I wasn't lying!)

After wiping the drool, we piled back in the car and continued to our destination, Hunt and Gather Antiques on Xerxes Avenue in Minneapolis.

If we thought we had been overwhelmed at Classic Retro at Pete's, we had another thing coming. When we entered Hunt and Gather, it was a gold mine. The items were amazing and the prices were affordable, the perfect combination! Here are some cool finds that I had to pass up.

It pained me to leave this map behind, but with 3 full grown adults, a day of shopping, and one small Honda, I didn't think it would fit.

We hope to visit again soon!
